Lord Huron — Strange Trails: Reviews

Retro at its best.....

01.01.2016 by Tom Howard (See all user reviews)

The debut album by Lord Huron, Lonesome Dreams, was an instantly likeable tuneful affair that signalled the arrival of a talented new band in the long American indie folk rock tradition. The band's follow-up is less immediate perhaps, but repays repeated listens. Possessed of a spaced-out slightly empty, dark rockabilly sound that wouldn't feel out of place on a David Lynch film soundtrack ('The World Ender' being a strong example), these songs reveal their riches slowly. The similar feel which many of them initially appear to have gradually separates out into something deeper that gives the album an overall coherence. 'La Belle Fleur Sauvage', 'Fool For Love' and 'The Night We Met' are exercises in pure loveliness, and there is an overall vibe not dissimilar to The War On Drugs's Lost In The Dream (most noticeable in 'Meet Me In The Woods') - no bad thing, as that was one of 2014's finest albums. There is a darkness here too. Listen to the lyrics on both 'Meet Me In The Woods' and 'The Yawning Grave' for evidence of this - 'Oh you fool, there are rules, I am coming for you / Darkness brings evil things, oh the reckoning begins'.Difficult second album? Lord Huron make it look easy. While continuing in a fairly similar vein to the phenomenal 'Lonesome Dreams' debut there is a sense that this an even more mature sound with a few nods to Johnny Cash (bass line rather than vocal) and the overall feel of adventuring in travel and love. I don't really understand how Lord Huron remain so firmly under the radar (particularly here in the UK) as their music is so accessible and uplifting. I would recommend both albums equally and my guess is that if you buy one, the other won't be far behind. Go for it.
