Bruce Johnston — Going Public: Reviews

1 4

The Sometime Beach Boy

06.09.2021 by david (See all user reviews)

Bruce Johnston is/was a sometime Beach Boy who took Brian Wilson's place in the band when they went on the road. He appeared on some of their albums (usually uncredited) and in many ways was an intricate part of the band. He'd been on the surfing scene for many years, and he's got a couple of strange "early days" albums from 1962/63 called Surfer's Pajama Party and Surfing' Round the World that you can get on this site. But Going Public is his classic album, and contains two songs that were major hits for other artists. "I Write the Songs" was a Barry Manilow huge hit, and "Disney Girls" was a hit both for the Beach Boys and Art Garfunkle. This set includes some other great songs, and considering it was Johnston's only real solo album, it's a shame he didn't record or release any other LP's.
